“A hundred years of whispers.” That’s what I often think when I stand before Ballonhangaren. It’s more than just a building. Ballonhangaren is a silent giant holding a century of stories within its timber frame. Located on Islands Brygge in Copenhagen, Ballonhangaren stands as a testament to a forgotten era of military history. This incredible structure, built in 1917, is one of the last remaining balloon hangars in all of Europe. Imagine massive observation balloons, used by the Danish Artillery Regiment, being housed within these very walls. These weren’t just any balloons. They were vital tools for precision shooting. Soldiers would ascend in baskets beneath the hot air balloons, observing and reporting back on artillery strikes. Can you picture those brave men, suspended high above, guiding the trajectory of fire? Ballonhangaren wasn’t alone. Nearby stood the stables, built a year later in 1918, to house the powerful horses that hauled these magnificent balloons in and out of the hangar. And just next door is Ballonparken, the barracks where the artillery and balloon crews were quartered. Ballonhangaren has witnessed remarkable transformations over the years. From a crucial military installation, it became a shelter for German refugees after World War II. Later, it was repurposed as an indoor riding arena for the Danish police, and today, it continues to serve as a riding school for Ridevenner riding club, thanks to Realdania By & Byg’s efforts. This building isn’t just a structure; it’s a living, breathing piece of Copenhagen’s history. It’s a reminder of a time when hot air balloons graced the skies above, serving a vital role in Denmark’s defense. So, the next time you see Ballonhangaren, remember its whispers. Remember the horses, the soldiers, and the balloons that once filled its vast interior. Remember the echoes of history that resonate within these sturdy timber walls.
