Since 1929, Ballehage Beach has been one of Denmark’s oldest sea baths. It sits in the southern part of Aarhus. This urban, public beach is a local treasure.

Ballehage Beach is nestled in the Marselisborg Forests. It borders the Bay of Aarhus. You’ll find it south of Marselisborg Yacht Harbour and the Aarhus River mouth. Helgenæs is across the bay to the east. Inland to the west is the Marselisborg Deer Park. Varna Palace is to the north.

The beach stretches about 1,000 meters. It’s between 10 and 30 meters wide. Ballehage Beach boasts white sand. Rows of boulders extend into the sea. These protect the coast from erosion.

Ballehage Beach is loved for sunbathing and swimming. The nearby forest shields it. It offers scenic views from the steep hillsides to the west. A jetty extends 20 meters into the sea. It’s perfect for jumping or relaxing.

Changing facilities are available. You will also find toilets and storage areas. Ballehage Beach welcomes everyone year-round. There is no charge to visit this lovely beach.

Lifeguards are not present during the summer. However, a safety station is equipped with a lifesaver. Ballehage Beach is in a busy area. There are restaurants and roads nearby. Aarhus Municipality tests the water regularly. They check for bacteria and algae. The beach earned the highest rating in 2014 and 2015.

The water deepens relatively quickly. It reaches two meters about 20 meters from the shore. Winter bathing enthusiasts gather here. Vikingebadeklubben Ballehage uses the beach’s facilities.

You can reach Ballehage Beach via Ørneredevej. Buses run from central Aarhus and the Aarhus Central Station. Bus number 31 stops at “Ørneredevej v. Ballehage”. The Deer Park is also nearby. Parking is available there.

Danish National Cycle Route 5 passes by Ballehage Beach. It runs along the coast of eastern Jutland. The route extends from Odder Municipality to central Aarhus. It continues north to Den Permanente and Bellevue Beach. You can walk along the coast from Indre by. Marselisborg Yacht Harbour is two kilometers north of the beach. Smaller boats can dock at the jetty.

Ballehage Beach also has a unique feature. About 100 to 150 meters are unofficially designated as a nude beach. Ballehage Beach combines nature and convenience.
