Opened in January 1916 Ballard High School initially housed around 1000 students. Designed by Edgar Blair this impressive building addressed Ballard’s long wait for a proper high school. The previous school was deemed inadequate. Ballard’s annexation to Seattle in 1907 highlighted this need. The patience of Ballard residents finally paid off.

Rapid growth led to additions. By 1925 a northwest wing was added. Eleven portable buildings previously accommodated the overflow. The new wing included a botany lab and greenhouse. It increased capacity to 1500 students. Enrollment continued to increase reaching almost 2000 students by 1938. To manage the numbers ninth graders were later transferred to other schools. Major renovations and additions followed in 1959.

Sadly the original Ballard High School was demolished in 1997. Asbestos contamination necessitated this. Seattle Superintendent John Stanford attended the groundbreaking ceremony for a new school. Mahlum & Nordfors and McKinley Gordon designed the replacement building. It opened in 1999. The new school incorporated modern technology. It could accommodate over 1500 students. Some classrooms even lacked windows. Ballard High School’s history spans over a century. It stands as a testament to the community’s commitment to education. The legacy continues. Its remarkable history continues to shape the lives of students today. The school’s journey from a small building to a modern facility is a captivating story. This journey mirrors the growth and evolution of Ballard itself.
