Consider this building before you. This is the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Kórház. It stands as one of Budapest’s largest hospitals. The Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Kórház is located in the X. district. It is in Kőbánya. Its address is Maglódi út 89-91. The Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Kórház officially became the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Kórház és Rendelőintézet in 2022.
Let’s step back in time. In 1927 a decree was issued. It called for replacing the poorhouse in Rósák tere. A new hospital with 1600 beds was needed. Two construction plans were created. Due to financial reasons it was planned in two phases. The first phase included the hospital building. It also included the pulmonary department.
Construction costs were lower than expected. They totaled 3 793 701 pengő. The first phase buildings were erected quickly. It happened between July 1930 and autumn 1931. The actual opening of the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Kórház was in 1932.
Back then the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Kórház was unique in Europe. It featured walking gardens and large terraces. The hospital even had sports equipment.
World War II disrupted the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Kórház. By 1945 nearly everything was restored. The first major expansions occurred between 1955 and 1971. In the 1970s huge new sections were added to the Bajcsy Kórház. Dr. Papp László served as director. He was the director between 1995 and 2009.
Today the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Kórház provides a range of medical services. These include diagnostics and specialist therapies. They treat both inpatients and outpatients. Rehabilitation and follow-up care are also provided. The hospital’s Kardiológiai Osztály was renovated recently. It is a key location for acute heart attack care in Budapest.
