Lisbon’s Bairro das Estacas neighborhood whispers stories of learning and growth. Today, we are not diving into a tale of cobblestone streets or ancient mariners. Instead, we will explore the history of the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences. It is a key part of this community.
The Faculty’s journey began long before its physical presence here. Until the early 1980s, psychology was taught within the philosophy courses. This took place in the Letters Faculties of Lisbon, Coimbra, and Porto. After the Carnation Revolution on April 25th, things changed. Psychology became its own field. New courses emerged in the Letters Faculties across the country around 1977.
Then, in 1980, a decree-law changed everything. Decree-Law No. 529/80 established Faculties of Psychology and Education Sciences. These new faculties were created in Lisbon, Coimbra, and Porto. This came from separating psychology from philosophy. In the late 1980s, the Faculty got its own building. It was located on the Alameda da Universidade, east of the Faculty of Law.
For nearly thirty years, the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences thrived. However, in 2009, the University of Lisbon approved new statutes. On December 31st, the Faculty was officially extinct. It was replaced by two new units. These were the Faculty of Psychology and the Institute of Education. Yet, these two new entities share the same physical space. They also share some services, like the library.
The building itself is a landmark. It was designed by Manuel Tainha and completed in 1990. It stands out for its horizontality. Its austere exterior features rhythmic rows of windows. The design allowed for future expansion. The building was planned to be divided into two sectors. The plan connects two structures. These are built around cloister-like courtyards. Students use the lateral walkway arcades as meeting spots.
There are two entrances. The southern facade faces Alameda da Universidade. It is the one most commonly used today. Despite blending into its surroundings, the Faculty building stands out. It even received the Valmor Prize and the Municipal Prize for Architecture in 1991.
Today, the Faculty of Psychology continues its work. It is home to the Research Center for Psychological Science. This center conducts research in psychological and neural adaptation. The research spans lifelong development and learning. The Center aims to address societal challenges. It provides insights and tools for individuals and communities. They are empowered to adapt and thrive. The Center’s strategy rests on scientific excellence. It also focuses on high-quality training. The Center disseminates its findings globally. It also transfers knowledge to society.
