Did a train station ever witness history unfold? Bahnhof Bonn-Beuel certainly has. This station, nestled in Bonn’s Beuel district, first opened its doors on March 1, 1871. Bahnhof Bonn-Beuel isn’t just a station. It’s a living museum of railway history. Its entrance building, the two platforms, and even the platform canopy are all protected historical monuments. Imagine stepping back in time as you walk these platforms. Bahnhof Bonn-Beuel boasts a unique feature. It has preserved its extensive freight tracks, a rarity for German stations. These tracks, once commonplace for local freight transport, are still operational. The freight shed is still accessible by road, and the loading tracks are ready for use by both road and rail. Even today, companies like Circus Roncalli utilize Bahnhof Bonn-Beuel during their visits to Bonn. Containers, wood, and railway gravel are among the goods regularly handled here. Another unusual aspect of Bahnhof Bonn-Beuel is its signal box. While neighboring stations have switched to electronic systems, Bahnhof Bonn-Beuel’s signal box remains operational and staffed. This modern signal box, located south of the entrance building, replaced two older ones in 1985. Bahnhof Bonn-Beuel is a crucial transportation hub. It is served hourly by the RE 8 (Rhein-Erft-Express) and RB 27 (Rhein-Erft-Bahn) lines. These services provide a near half-hourly connection. Furthermore, Bahnhof Bonn-Beuel serves as Bonn’s main station when long-distance trains are diverted from the West Rhine Railway to the East Rhine line. Just outside, tram line 62 connects Beuel to Bonn city center, Bonn Hauptbahnhof, Dottendorf, Ramersdorf, and Oberkassel. While modernization plans are underway, they come with a cost. Bahnhof Bonn-Beuel will gain two suburban tracks but lose its freight tracks, severing the link between rail and road for local freight. Half of the freight yard building will be demolished, the rest moved. Sadly, even the cherished platform canopy, a popular film location, will be lost. But today, Bahnhof Bonn-Beuel stands as a testament to its rich past and its continuing role in Bonn’s present.
