Has anyone ever told you about the whirling dervishes of Istanbul? Their mesmerizing spins and hypnotic chants? Well, right here at the Bahariye Mevlevihanesi, those mystical rituals once echoed through these very walls. The Bahariye Mevlevihanesi, also known as the Beşiktaş Mevlevi Lodge, is a resurrected piece of Istanbul’s soul. This place whispers stories of a rich cultural past, a heritage nearly lost but thankfully reclaimed. Built in the 19th century during the Ottoman era, it stands as a testament to the enduring power of tradition. The Bahariye Mevlevihanesi wasn’t always here though. It began its life in Beşiktaş where the Çırağan Palace now stands. The original lodge, built in 1622 by Ohrili Hüseyin Pasha, met its unfortunate end around 260 years later. Demolished to make way for the opulent palace, the Mevlevi order was forced to relocate. They rebuilt their lodge in Maçka, but fate, it seemed, had other plans. Just five years later, the Maçka lodge was also demolished, this time to accommodate new barracks. Finally, in 1875, the foundation for the Bahariye Mevlevihanesi was laid here, beside the Golden Horn. The lodge opened its doors in 1877, a beacon of spiritual practice. Sultan Abdülhamid II later added a 28-room harem suite, further enhancing the complex. Sadly, like many historical treasures, the Bahariye Mevlevihanesi fell victim to time and tragedy. Neglect and a devastating fire left the lodge in ruins, a silent monument to a forgotten era. But the story doesn’t end there. In 2008, the Eyüpsultan Municipality breathed new life into the Bahariye Mevlevihanesi, carefully reconstructing it to its former glory. Today, it stands as a poignant reminder of the Mevlevi order and their captivating ceremonies.
