Hidden amongst the trees in Bagsværd lies a school with a unique story. Bagsværd Friskole, formerly known as Hanna Skolen, isn’t your typical Danish school. It’s a place where creativity flourishes and individuality is celebrated. Bagsværd Friskole began in 1957. Two parents, Ellen and Kristian Friis, dreamt of a school where learning wasn’t just about filling young minds with facts. They envisioned a nurturing environment. A place of kindness and respect where children could develop a love for learning. They published their dream in the Bagsværd Folkeblad, calling out to other like-minded parents. Their vision resonated with the community, and soon, Bagsværd Friskole was born. Initially, classes were held in a rented room at an after-school program also called Hanna Skolen, run by Ellen’s mother. With only six students and a handful of dedicated teachers, Bagsværd Friskole’s journey began. The school’s early days were marked by resourcefulness. A height-adjustable table and six small chairs were the first purchases. School fees were a modest 45 kroner per month. Parents even covered the cost of textbooks. The curriculum included the classic “Ole Bole ABC” with illustrations by the beloved Danish cartoonist, Storm P. Bagsværd Friskole quickly outgrew its initial space. It moved to the charming “Norske Hus” and later to Ellen’s parents’ villa on Bagsværdvej. The school continued to expand. It added pavilions, a music room, and eventually a separate building for the upper grades. Bagsværd Friskole’s growth reflects its commitment to fostering creativity and high academic standards. Today, Bagsværd Friskole thrives with around 240 students. It continues to uphold the founding principles of Ellen and Kristian. It remains a vibrant hub for learning, where music, creativity, and academics intertwine. The school offers classes from 0th to 9th grade. Bagsværd Friskole has evolved from a small, parent-driven initiative into a respected institution. It has become a testament to the power of a shared vision and the dedication of its community.
