Why is Bagley Viewpoint so special? This small park offers a peek into Seattle’s past and a stunning view of its present. Today, we’re at Bagley Viewpoint, a place that’s more than just a pretty panorama. It’s a point where history, civic pride, and natural beauty converge.
Bagley Viewpoint is located in the North Broadway Neighborhood at 2548 Delmar Drive East. It sits just off Delmar Drive, the road that crosses Highway 520.
Once upon a time, this spot was intended to be a grand entrance to Interlaken Boulevard. The Olmsted Brothers, famed landscape architects, envisioned a grand concourse here. Their 1908 drawings included walks, entrance gates, and shelters extending down to Portage Bay. It would have been quite the welcome to the city. Imagine a grand entrance with paths leading to the water. Sadly, the construction of the Evergreen Floating Bridge or SR 520 in 1966 changed those plans. The connection to Interlaken Boulevard was greatly reduced.
Even grander plans were proposed in 1903. The Olmsted Brothers suggested extending the boulevard network. This “Volunteer Hill Parkway” would have run to the bluff northwest of the Broadway electric car line. Then, it would have turned southward along the bluff west of Tenth Avenue. This boulevard approach to Volunteer Park never came to be.
The viewpoint gets its name from Dr. Herman Beardsley Bagley. He was one of the region’s first homeopathic physicians. This might not sound so interesting. But he lived from 1845 to 1899. Who knew the roots of Seattle’s homeopathic medical community went back that far? His widow, Mrs. M.W. Glenn, honored him with a gift. She presented an ornamental drinking fountain and pedestal with lights. This was to commemorate his service to the community.
Pulling into the tiny parking lot in front of Bagley Viewpoint takes a quick maneuver. It is not much more than a viewpoint. The park is only 0.1 acres.
Due to thick vegetation, it can be tough to get a really good sight line. Still, Bagley Viewpoint offers a unique perspective. You can see both the city and the water.
Bagley Viewpoint is a reminder of Seattle’s early days. It honors a pioneer doctor. It showcases the Olmsted Brothers’ vision. As you gaze out over the view, think about the layers of history beneath your feet. Think about Dr. Bagley and the Olmsted Brothers. Their contributions helped shape Seattle into the city we know today.
So, as you leave Bagley Viewpoint, carry with you a sense of Seattle’s past. Remember the grand plans, the dedicated doctor, and the enduring beauty of this special place.
