Indonesia’s heart beats faster here at the Badminton Association of Indonesia. This association is the governing body of badminton in Indonesia. It is known locally as Persatuan Bulutangkis Seluruh Indonesia or PBSI. Founded on May 5 1951 in Bandung PBSI has united badminton across Indonesia.

PBSI joined the Badminton Asia Confederation in 1959. Later it also joined the Badminton World Federation. In 2020 Indonesian badminton was ranked third in the world by the BWF. The Badminton Association of Indonesia also governs the Indonesia national badminton team.

Badminton’s roots run deep in Indonesia. Dutch colonialists introduced the sport in the early 20th century. In 1923 the PB Djakarta badminton club formed. This club later became the PBSI. By 1935 Indonesia hosted its first major badminton tournament. It was the Maros Badminton Tournament in South Sulawesi.

Indonesia became a founding member of the International Badminton Federation in 1950. That federation is now known as the Badminton World Federation. The Indonesian team won the first Thomas Cup in 1960. This solidified the country’s badminton prowess.

Badminton became a demonstration sport at the 1972 Olympic Games. Full competitive status came in the 1992 Olympic Games. Since then Indonesian players have excelled. They have won numerous medals in the Olympics World Championships and All-England Open.

Badminton is more than a sport here. It is part of Indonesia’s cultural identity. People of all ages enjoy it. Competitive matches become lively community events. Cheering and support fill the air for local players. Casual games feature in traditional Indonesian festivities. The sport is a recreational attraction in village celebrations cultural events and religious gatherings.

The Badminton Association of Indonesia oversees many tournaments. These include the Indonesia Open. This annual event attracts the world’s elite players. Also on the calendar are the Indonesia Masters and the Indonesia Masters Super 100. The Indonesia International Challenge the Indonesia International Series and the Indonesian League are further events that it oversees.

PBSI has had many general chairmen. Rochdi Partaatmadja was the first starting in 1951. Sudirman followed him. Other notable chairmen include Try Sutrisno Chairul Tanjung and Sutiyoso. Currently Muhammad Fadil Imran is the chairman. His term is set to end in 2028.

Indonesia’s tropical climate suits year-round outdoor play. The low equipment cost makes it accessible to almost everyone. Courts are often beside houses or apartment buildings. These structures act as windbreaks.

Indonesian dominance began in the 1950s. In 1957 Indonesia competed in its first Thomas Cup. The country won this triennial competition seven times between 1961 and 1984. Rudy Kurniawan Hartono won a record eight All-England titles from 1968 to 1976.

Susi Susanti won the women’s singles at the 1992 Olympics. She was the first Indonesian athlete to earn an Olympic gold medal since independence. Allan Kusuma captured gold in the men’s singles. Rexy Mainaky and Ricky Subagja won gold in the men’s doubles in 1996.

The Badminton Association of Indonesia has been instrumental in nurturing talent. It ensures badminton remains a source of national pride. It drives Indonesia’s continued success on the global stage.
