The Bachlauf is a modern addition to the park. It wasn’t always here. For decades the water from artesian wells flowed unseen. These wells were dug between 1878 and 1881. They are about 700 meters away. Their water flowed into the city’s sewer system. Imagine that hidden flow. The constant unseen current beneath the city’s streets.
In 2009 things changed. The city decided to create a visible stream. Twelve to fifteen liters of water now flow each second. The water travels from the wells through this carefully designed Bachlauf. It finally empties into Lake Constance. The transformation of this hidden water source into a visible feature is a testament to the city’s commitment to sustainable development.
This park itself has a rich history. Before it was a park it was the site of the Herosé textile factory. This factory operated until 2000. The city then bought the land. They had a big idea. They wanted to turn the industrial area into something new. A competition was held. The winning design integrated housing and workspaces. This plan also incorporated the Bachlauf. It linked the historic buildings with the new developments.
The Herosé family’s legacy is woven into the very fabric of this place. Their old villa is now home to the University of Konstanz’s Excellence Cluster. The family’s newer villa. The Rheinburg. It has served many purposes. It currently undergoes renovation. It will soon serve as a meeting place for local groups.
The Bachlauf is more than just a pretty stream. It is a symbol of Konstanz’s transformation. It reflects the city’s dedication to preserving its history while embracing its future.
