Here stands Bab Sidi Bou Jida. This gate whispers tales of a time when Fes el Bali, the old city, was taking shape.

Bab Sidi Bou Jida is not just a gate. It is one of the important entrances to the ancient city of Fez. The gate is a window into Moroccan history. Bab Sidi Bou Jida served as the outer entrance to the Keddane district.

Imagine Fes long ago. The city’s fortifications evolved. Expansions destructions and reconstructions marked its growth. Walls defined the city’s limits. Gates gained social significance.

This small gate at the northeastern tip of the city has seen many names. The earliest gate here was called Bab Abi Sofyan. Later, it was also known as Bab Beni Msafer. These names echo through time. They connect us to the people who once passed through this very spot.

The ramparts protected Fes from attack. They controlled who entered and exited. City gates locked at night. The authorities controlled the flow of goods. Taxes were collected efficiently here.

The Almoravid emir Yusuf ibn Tashfin ordered the walls of the two cities to be demolished. He built a new wall around both cities, thus unifying them for the first time.

Consider the construction methods. The walls of Fes, like those of Marrakesh, used rammed earth. This technique, also known as pisé or tabia, mixed mud and soil. Straw or lime aided adhesion. Lime made the walls harder.

Workers pressed materials into sections held by wooden boards. Once settled, the boards were removed. This process left rows of little holes across the walls. Lime or stucco coated the walls, protecting them.

Maintenance was constant. Rain eroded the materials over time. Old structures remain intact only with continuous restoration. Some walls appear brand new thanks to this care.

Bab Sidi Bou Jida stands as a reminder of Fes’s past. The gate recalls the city’s defenses. The gate reminds the authorities control. The gate shows the gate’s evolution. It connects us to the people and events that shaped Fes. This is a place to reflect on the history beneath our feet.
