“Haggling is part of Moroccan culture” someone once told me. Here at Camp International, near the captivating city of Fes, you’re stepping into a world where the art of negotiation thrives. Camp International offers a unique experience for travelers exploring Morocco.

Camping International de Fes is one of the two campsites near Fes. This camp is known for its spaciousness, a welcome change in this region. It’s the bigger one of the two and is just a bit closer to the old city, the Medina of Fes.

Imagine arriving here after a long journey. The large gate welcomes vehicles of all sizes. Camp International has no height restrictions. You’ll find large pitches perfect for setting up camp. If you are traveling with a dog it is a perfect place to stay. It’s a remarkably large campsite, somewhat unusual for this region. A walk around the perimeter takes about 20 minutes.

Camp International is not only for camping. It’s also a place for celebrations. Weddings and parties often take place here near the gate and pool. During holidays, Ramadan, and wedding season, this corner of Camp International comes alive, especially in the evenings. But don’t worry the campsite is large enough to find a quiet spot away from the festivities.

Let’s talk about rates. Prices may seem fixed at the reception but it’s always wise to inquire. Ask around and note the quoted price to avoid surprises. Never hand over your passport. Fill in any required forms yourself. If they ask how long you plan to stay, be prepared to negotiate.

One common practice is to inflate the price based on the size of your RV or campervan. Remember, Morocco is known for its negotiation culture. In 2010, the rates were around 40 MAD per person and 30 MAD for a caravan, mobile home, RV, or campervan including electricity and hot showers. Buses or trucks were charged 55 MAD.

Camp International can arrange a guide for you to explore the Medina in Fes. The campsite receives a commission, a common practice in the tourist industry. A taxi ride to the Medina takes about 15 to 20 minutes. An official guide costs around 150 MAD for 4 hours, a rate regulated by the Fes municipality.

If you prefer, you can find a “petite taxi” away from Camp International. Ignore anyone who tells you the Medina is closed unless it’s a public or religious holiday. Always confirm the agreed price with the driver and guide before getting in the taxi. Stick to the price unless the service is exceptional.

When visiting the Medina, remember the golden rule: never take the initial price at face value. Opening prices can be incredibly high. Don’t hesitate to provide feedback to retailers who ask for exorbitant prices.

Camp International offers more than just a place to stay. It provides an immersive experience in Moroccan culture. Embrace the art of haggling, explore the Medina, and create lasting memories in this enchanting city.
