Feel the ancient stones beneath your feet. We stand before Bab Ftouh. This isn’t just any gate. It’s a story etched in brick and mortar a testament to Fes’s enduring spirit.

Bab Ftouh or the Gate of Triumph as it’s often called is one of Fes’s most iconic landmarks. It’s the main southeastern gate of Fes el Bali the old walled city. Imagine the scene centuries ago. Caravans laden with spices and silks passed through this very arch. Merchants bartered their wares. The air buzzed with a thousand voices.

Bab Ftouh’s history stretches back to the 13th century. It wasn’t always this majestic structure. An earlier Idrisid gate called Bab al-Qibla stood here. But in 1059 to 1061 a Zenata emir Al-Fetouh Ibn Dounas built a new gate. This gate took his name hence Bab Ftouh. He was a powerful figure and his rivalry with his brother shaped the city’s landscape. His brother’s name is immortalized in Bab Guissa another significant gate in Fes.

The Almohads conquered Fes in 1145. They destroyed the existing walls. Later they rebuilt them. Bab Ftouh as we see it today largely dates to this Almohad period. The Almohad ruler Muhammad al-Nasir played a key role in its construction. Further modifications and restorations took place in the 18th century under the Alaouite sultan Muhammad ibn Abdallah.

Look closely at the architecture. Notice the horseshoe arch a hallmark of Moorish design. The two rectangular towers flank the gate. These added fortification to the structure. Bab Ftouh stands about 15 meters high. It’s a truly impressive sight. It is one of the city’s most massive gates. Its height reflects the importance of this access point.

Beyond the gate lies a bustling area. Street vendors offer their wares. The scent of spices fills the air. The sounds of artisans at work create a lively atmosphere. This is the heart of Fes el Bali a vibrant tapestry of sights and sounds.

Just outside Bab Ftouh you’ll find a vast cemetery. The Bab Ftouh Cemetery is one of Fes’s largest and most prestigious. It holds the graves of many notable citizens. Important local saints and marabouts are buried here too. This place speaks of the city’s deep history and its connection to those who came before. The presence of a prayer area called the Msalla of the Pasha adds to this sacred space.

Bab Ftouh isn’t merely a gate. It’s a portal. A portal to history to culture to the very soul of Fes. Step through it and allow yourself to be transported to another time. The echoes of the past whisper secrets in the wind. You’re not just visiting a gate you’re experiencing a living legend.
