“Fancy a journey through art, culture, and history?” I ask, gesturing towards the Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah. This museum is not just a collection of artifacts. It represents a vision realized through dedication and foresight.
Let’s step inside the Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah. The Universiti Sains Malaysia established this gallery. It was all thanks to Tan Sri Prof Hamzah Sendut. He was USM’s first Vice-Chancellor.
The idea sparked after USM introduced Fine Art and Humanities programs in the early 1970s. USM was the first Malaysian public university to offer Fine Art studies. The university gathered artworks and exhibits to support student learning.
A special committee acquired items under Tan Sri Prof. Hamzah Sendut. Prominent USM scholars led the acquisition efforts. Later, Tun Hamdan Sheikh Tahir, the second Vice-Chancellor, supported the initiative. The museum acquired paintings, silverware, and musical instruments.
T.K. Sabapathy became the first Honorary Curator. In 1981, Wan Zakaria Wan Ismail became the first Curator. He developed the collections. The collections were initially under the USM Library. Lim Huck Tee supervised them. The university purchased items from Kuala Lumpur galleries. The Performing Arts Programme also acquired musical instruments and costumes.
The USM Museum and Art Gallery officially opened on January 21, 1982. It was renamed Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah on March 19, 2007.
The Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah building has a rich history. The area connects to Bukit Tok Jannatun. A Minangkabau explorer received land from the Sultan of Kedah in the 18th century. Later, David Brown, an Englishman, owned the land. William Daniel painted Brown’s residence in 1818. The British army later acquired the site. They named it “Minden” after a German town. It then housed the Malaysian army. Later, it became Universiti Pulau Pinang. Before becoming the USM Museum and Gallery in 1982, the building was the University Library. The building showcases neo-classical style. Doric columns adorn it.
The Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah boasts diverse collections. Fine art and video art are displayed. Traditional Malaysian and Asian performing arts are highlighted. Islamic art, Chinese calligraphy and Malay daggers are exhibited. Ethnographic items showcase Malay, Iban, and Straits Chinese cultures. Ancient artifacts and modern technologies are also part of the collection. The Tun Hamdan Sheikh Tahir Gifts Collection is another highlight. Even a Cosplay Collection finds its home here.
The Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah commits to preserving Malaysia’s heritage. It offers learning spaces. It supports research in arts, culture, science, and technology. It organizes beneficial programs for visitors.
