Perhaps Gazanfer Ağa envisioned a legacy extending far beyond his lifetime when he commissioned this medrese. Here at the Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi Vakfı Gazanfer Ağa Medresesi Eğitim ve Kültür Merkezi, we stand on ground steeped in history.

This medrese, completed in 1590 AD, stands as a testament to Ottoman culture. Gazanfer Ağa, a prominent figure serving under Sultan II Selim, Sultan III Murad, and Sultan III Mehmed, envisioned this complex as a hub of learning and spirituality.

Tragically, Gazanfer Ağa’s life was cut short during a Janissary rebellion in 1602. Yet, his foundation lived on. The foundation charter of the complex dates back to 1595. It reveals fascinating details about the medrese’s operations. Sixteen individuals resided here, each receiving 5 akçe per day. A particularly bright student was chosen as the muid. He earned 10 akçe daily for his services, teaching from two designated cells. Imagine the daily life here. Students gathered after morning prayer to recite the Quran for the founder’s soul. Each received 2 akçe for this pious act. Even the gatekeeper and maintenance worker received their due, 4 and 3 akçe respectively.

The Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi Vakfı Gazanfer Ağa Medresesi Eğitim ve Kültür Merkezi wasn’t always a cultural center. In 1943, it transformed into the Municipality Museum. Ekrem Hakkı Ayverdi oversaw repairs, rescuing the building from disrepair. The restoration concluded in the 1950s. Before its museum days, a library thrived here. Gazanfer Ağa’s initial donation of 120 manuscripts grew into a collection of 5,133 books. In 1929, this treasure trove moved to the Süleymaniye Library Directorate. From 1950 to 1989, the building served as the Municipal Museum. Then it relocated to Yıldız Palace, becoming the Cartoon and Humor Museum.

The Gazanfer Ağa Madrasah stands near the Bozdoğan Aqueduct on Atatürk Boulevard. Architect Davud Ağa designed it. It’s a small complex containing a tomb and fountain. The madrasah is west of the front courtyard. Sandstones form its structure. Bricks accent the west side walls. Twelve diamond-headed columns support the porticoes. Sixteen domes top this section. The U-shaped layout includes fourteen cells and an added chamber. Each room has two windows, a furnace, and a cabinet. The square classroom opens to the courtyard via spring arcs. A tromp dome covers the classroom.

Today, Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi Vakfı continues the legacy. They serve students coming to Istanbul for university. They provide educational activities and open doors to more students. The husn-i hat dersi, or calligraphy lesson, is a beautiful example.

As you leave the Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi Vakfı Gazanfer Ağa Medresesi Eğitim ve Kültür Merkezi, consider the layers of history embedded in its walls. It’s a place of learning, a museum, and a testament to Gazanfer Ağa’s enduring vision.
