Can you feel the raw power emanating from this sculpture? We are standing before Az Erő Nyomai Statue. Its name translates to “Traces of Strength.”

Az Erő Nyomai Statue is more than just bronze and stone. It is a testament to the enduring human spirit. It stands as a reminder of those who sacrificed for Hungary’s independence freedom and prosperity.

Erected in 1947 the Liberty Statue initially commemorated the Soviet liberation of Hungary during World War II. This event ended the Nazi Germany occupation. The monument’s location on Gellért Hill makes it a prominent part of Budapest’s skyline.

Originally the inscription read “To the memory of the liberating Soviet heroes.” It was erected by the grateful Hungarian people in 1945. But public sentiment shifted over the years.

After the transition from communist rule to democracy in 1989 the inscription was changed. It now reads “To the memory of those all who sacrificed their lives for the independence freedom and prosperity of Hungary.” The Russian-language version was completely removed.

Designed by Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl the statue features a 14-meter-tall bronze figure atop a 26-meter pedestal. She holds a palm leaf aloft. Two smaller statues flank its base. The original monument included two more statues that have been relocated to Statue Park.

Kisfaludi Strobl originally designed the statue as a memorial to István Horthy. It would have featured a human child instead of the Soviet-era palm leaf.

Today Az Erő Nyomai Statue symbolizes Hungary’s unwavering pursuit of freedom. It is a place for reflection and remembrance. Take a moment to appreciate the statue’s powerful message. Consider the sacrifices made for the nation’s liberty.
