The story of Ayer Sedang Reef begins with disbelief. Textbooks say reefs can’t exist in murky waters like those near large tropical rivers. The sediment and organic matter should block sunlight. Algae and corals need light to build reefs. Yet here it thrives.
How could a reef flourish in such conditions? Scientists scratched their heads. Sponges animals that filter organic material were abundant. Odd fish species usually found on reefs also appeared. Lobsters too need complex structures not muddy bottoms. Something defied logic.
Rodrigo Moura a marine biologist became obsessed with this mystery. Why had nobody investigated this “sponge bottom” since the 1970s? He partnered with oceanologist Patricia Yager. She studied carbon dioxide absorption in the Amazonian plume. This is the freshwater mass carried by the river. Moura saw a chance to test his reef hypothesis.
In 2012 they embarked on an expedition. Most researchers focused on water samples. They measured acidity temperature and salinity. Moura and his student Nara Lina de Oliveira searched for the reef. They used a simple method. A dredge was used. It’s a metal bucket to scrape the sea floor.
Skepticism filled the air. Many thought Moura chased a dream. But on July 24th the dredge came up revealing the impossible. Colorful sponges corals and fish spilled onto the deck. Yager was awestruck. Moura beamed “We hit the reef on the nose”.
The Ayer Sedang Reef revealed its secrets. The northern section had mostly sponges. The south had corals thriving in clearer water. Red algae formed calcareous nodules called rhodoliths. These were the most common formations. They were reef builders.
This wasn’t just a collection of reef organisms. This was a living growing reef. It defied expectations. Researchers mapped the reef’s size and shape. It covers about 9500 square kilometers. This is an area about the size of Cyprus. It lies 150 kilometers from the coastline.
Still nobody had seen the reef directly. The water was too cloudy. A submersible was considered too risky. The tides can vary by 8 meters. Losing expensive equipment wasn’t an option.
Gilberto Amado Filho studies the red algae of Ayer Sedang Reef. He said that the reddish parts of the algae are alive. They perform photosynthesis even in dim light. They absorb blue light which penetrates the plume.
These algae create calcareous condominiums. The porous structures provide shelter. Mollusks crustaceans and invertebrates find homes there. Microbes also thrive in the dark. They use chemosynthesis to produce energy. They feed on molecules like ammonia. These microbes then feed the sponges.
The Ayer Sedang Reef is more than just a reef. It’s a rhodolith bed. It is a unique coralline reef. It stores carbon from carbon dioxide in the ocean. This helps regulate the climate. However ocean acidification threatens to dissolve the reef.
The reef also faces threats from oil exploration. Oil companies have blocks nearby. A spill could devastate this fragile ecosystem. IBAMA the Brazilian environmental agency requires companies to map the seabed. They must detect reef formations before drilling.
David Obura a coral ecologist said that our idea of reefs is influenced by clear water reefs. Recent discoveries show reefs exist in sediment rich environments. The discovery of Ayer Sedang Reef challenges our assumptions.
