Remember the name Ayer Itam as we explore its story. Did you know Ayer Itam means “black water” in Malay? This name comes from the murky waters of the Ayer Itam River. Let’s delve into the story of this Penang suburb.

Ayer Itam’s history began soon after George Town was founded in 1786. British East India Company officials started exploring the island’s interior. Captain Francis Light led efforts to clear land for agriculture. Pepper and nutmeg farms appeared in the hills. Light also had strawberries planted on Penang Hill. His residence, Suffolk House, was built by the Air Itam River.

The agricultural village of Ayer Itam grew throughout the 19th century. Farmers owned fruit and vegetable farms in the hills. Even today, fresh produce comes from these foothills. It is distributed daily to markets all over the city. Ayer Itam once housed Malaysia’s first zoo. A monk named Fa Kong supposedly opened it in the 1920s. However, the zoo closed before World War II due to high costs.

The Great Ayer Itam Fire of 1935 devastated the area. More than 100 wooden homes burned down. This led to brick buildings replacing the wooden ones. Ayer Itam also became a refuge for those fleeing violence. During the Penang Riots of 1867, some city residents evacuated here. World War II brought even more refugees. During the Japanese Occupation, Ayer Itam was a site of Sook Ching massacres. Chinese civilians were killed here.

Since the 1950s, Ayer Itam has urbanized rapidly. Living standards have risen and the landscape has transformed. Now, there are more high-rise buildings. This makes Ayer Itam one of George Town’s most densely populated areas. Ayer Itam lies in the valley between Batu Lanchang Hill, Bukit Penara, and Penang Hill. Ayer Itam Road and Batu Lanchang Lane connect it to George Town’s city center. Paya Terubong Road links it to Paya Terubong and southern Penang Island. The suburb covers 1.8 square kilometers.

In 2020, Ayer Itam had a population of 16,974. That is a density of 9,430 people per square kilometer. Ethnic Chinese make up over 72% of the population. Malays account for another 12%. Indians comprise more than 11% of the suburb’s residents. Ayer Itam Road is the main road through Ayer Itam. It stretches about 4.5 kilometers. Rapid Penang buses connect Ayer Itam to various destinations. These include the city center, the airport, and Balik Pulau.

So, next time you pass through Ayer Itam, remember its journey. From pepper farms to a refuge during wartime, it has transformed. It has grown into a vibrant suburb of George Town that is worth knowing.
