Imagine a road that shaves off precious time. That’s the Ayer Itam–Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway Bypass. This 6 km stretch is more than just asphalt and concrete. It is a solution to a nagging problem. This bypass aims to drastically cut travel time between Farlim and the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

Introduced in 2014 as part of the Penang Transport Master Plan it is a key piece in easing George Town’s traffic. The plan includes three new motorways. It also proposes a cross-strait tunnel to connect the city with Seberang Perai. Consortium Zenith Construction was chosen to develop these roads in 2013. They were granted land development rights at Gurney Bay. This eliminated the need for toll charges.

The Ayer Itam–Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway Bypass was projected to halve commute times. Imagine traveling from Farlim to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway in half the time! The speed limit is set at 70 km/h. The bypass was prioritized due to heavy traffic in Farlim. The route cuts through hilly terrain. This required three twin tunnels to be bored into the hills. The tunnels minimize environmental impact. These tunnels measure nearly 2 km in total. The elevated sections span about 4.2 km. At-grade sections add up to 1.8 km. The entire project costs an estimated RM851 million.

Construction received federal approval in 2017. An agreement was signed with Consortium Zenith Construction in 2019. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in November of that year. Actual construction began in 2021. Completion is expected by 2025.

As of February 2024 construction had reached 50%. The bypass promises to reduce the 40-minute drive to under 10 minutes. Key elements of the project include bored piling. Also important are the construction of piers and slope stabilization. Utility relocation is also a significant part.

The Ayer Itam–Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway Bypass includes three interchanges. Interchange One is at Lebuhraya Thean Teik. Interchange Two is at Jalan Bukit Gambir-Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah. Interchange Three is at Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway.

The Ayer Itam–Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway Bypass represents progress. It will offer a smoother ride. It will save time for commuters.
