Gazing across the Pasig River, Ayala Bridge stands as a testament to Manila’s enduring spirit. Ayala Bridge connects the vibrant districts of Ermita and San Miguel. This steel giant has witnessed Manila’s transformation over centuries. Ayala Bridge isn’t just a bridge. It’s a living story etched in steel and anchored in time. Originally, two separate wooden bridges existed. They were built in 1872 by Don Jacobo Zóbel y Zangroniz. These bridges, known as the San Miguel and Concepcion sections, converged at Isla de Convalecencia. Sadly, within a decade, both sections collapsed. From these ruins emerged the Philippines’ first steel bridge in 1908. This marked a new chapter for Ayala Bridge. Ayala Bridge took its current form in the 1930s. During this reconstruction, the two sections were unified into a single span. Ayala Bridge underwent a major rehabilitation in 2015. It was raised by 70 centimeters. This enhancement fortified the bridge against potential earthquakes. Today, Ayala Bridge proudly carries Circumferential Road 1 and National Route 180. It continues to facilitate the flow of life and commerce across the Pasig River. Every January 9th, Ayala Bridge takes on another role. It serves as a procession route for the Feast of the Black Nazarene. This annual event adds a layer of cultural significance to the bridge’s story.
