Why is this street named Avenue Marcel Gargam? We are in Aubervilliers just outside of Paris. Avenue Marcel Gargam pays tribute to a courageous resident. Marcel Gargam, a carpenter by trade, lived a seemingly ordinary life until the horrors of World War II gripped France. He joined the French Resistance movement in 1942. Gargam bravely gathered intelligence on German activities in the northern region of Paris. He reported on German-controlled factories, troop deployments, and the identities of collaborators. His network extended to other resistance fighters like Gabriel Rabot and Marcel Berthelot. However, his courageous actions were cut short in 1942. Gargam was arrested and brutally interrogated. He endured severe beatings but refused to betray his comrades. He was handed over to the German authorities and imprisoned in Fresnes Prison. Despite enduring torture and facing a grim fate, Gargam’s spirit remained unbroken. He was tried and sentenced to death by the German military court in February 1943. He was executed by firing squad at Fort Mont-Valérien on February 26, 1943. Avenue Marcel Gargam stands as a testament to his sacrifice and the indomitable spirit of those who resisted oppression during one of history’s darkest chapters.
