“Avenue Jacques Debris” might sound like just another street name. But behind it lies a story of courage and sacrifice during World War II. This avenue commemorates Jacques Debris. He was a young Parisian florist who joined the French Resistance.

Born in 1927, Jacques Debris lived a short but impactful life. He became a member of the Forces Françaises de l’Intérieur FFI in the Nerville group. In August 1944, the group captured two German soldiers. They released them unharmed.

Tragedy struck when SS troops encircled Nerville. They rounded up local men between 16 and 30 years old. Jacques Debris was among the thirteen hostages taken. They were brought to the Enghien feldgendarmerie for interrogation.

The hostages were moved by the SS. They were executed on August 16, 1944, near Domont. Jacques Debris was only 17 years old. His body was left at the scene.

Jacques Debris was later buried in Tremblay-en-France. He was posthumously honored as “Mort pour la France” or Died for France. His name is inscribed on war memorials in Tremblay-en-France and Domont. These memorials ensure his sacrifice is not forgotten.

The Avenue Jacques Debris serves as a reminder. It is a reminder of the young men and women who fought for freedom. It is a reminder of the high price of liberation. As you walk along Avenue Jacques Debris. Take a moment to reflect on his bravery. Remember the countless others who resisted Nazi occupation.
