Avenue Jack Gourevitch is more than just an address. It is a tribute to a man who stood against tyranny. He was a communist activist. He resisted the Nazi occupation.

Born Isaac Gourevitch in Belarus in 1884, Jack’s life took him far from his homeland. He became a shoemaker. But his true calling was fighting for justice. He joined the communist movement.

In 1941, Gourevitch’s activism led to his arrest. He was caught during a meeting in Paris. The Nazis sent him to Drancy internment camp. This camp was a holding place for Jewish prisoners.

On December 15, 1941, Jack Gourevitch was executed. He was a hostage at Mont-Valérien. He died with 67 others. Fifty-two of them were also Jewish prisoners from Drancy.

Gourevitch’s sacrifice was not immediately recognized. He was not officially recognized as “Mort pour la France”. This means “Died for France”. But his name lives on through this avenue. It commemorates his bravery.
