General Paul-François Grossetti was born in Paris. His father however hailed from Grossetto-Prugna in Corsica. Young Paul followed a military career. He served in Africa and Asia. He even participated in the Tonkin Expedition establishing French Cochinchina.

Grossetti’s true heroism unfolded during World War I. By 1914 he was a general commanding the 42nd Infantry Division. He fought in the Battles of the Marne and Flanders. He played a crucial role in the Battle of the Yser. There he reinforced the Belgian army halting the German advance. This bravery earned him the title “The Bull of the Yser”.

Stories abound about his legendary courage. Some say he calmly sat on a chair near Pervyse station during heavy shelling. An anecdote from a British officer Major Baird describes Grossetti’s calm demeanor. Baird suggested a retreat. Grossetti reportedly replied “Do I look like someone ready to leave? In Grossetti there is ‘gros’ moving is painful”. Another story recounts him calmly sitting during shelling. He simply commented “I felt a breath of forge and that’s all” after a shell exploded near him.

After battles in Champagne and Verdun Grossetti commanded French troops on the Eastern Front. He contracted dysentery dying in Paris in January 1918 just months before the Armistice. He received a state funeral at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. His bravery is remembered in Ajaccio where a statue stands in his honor. A fitting tribute to a remarkable general whose unwavering spirit lives on in the very name of this avenue. Avenue Général Grossetti a name whispered with respect a legacy etched in courage and resilience. A reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom.
