This French squadron’s story began in 1942. General Charles de Gaulle wanted French soldiers on all fronts. He sent a group of fighter pilots to aid the Soviet Union. This unit became known as Groupe de Chasse 3 Normandie.
The squadron’s name changed over time. In 1944, it became the R\u00e9giment de Chasse Normandie-Niemen. Joseph Stalin himself named it Niemen. This recognized their bravery in the Battle of the Niemen River.
