Lost in the 3rd arrondissement is the Avenue du Grand Veneur. This pedestrian street offers a glimpse into Parisian history. It is a pathway to the Square Saint-Gilles Grand Veneur – Pauline-Roland.

The Avenue du Grand Veneur owes its name to the Hôtel du Grand-Veneur. This is the destination to which it leads. Created in 1987, it was initially known as voie E/3.

The street begins at Rue des Arquebusiers. It provides access to the Square Saint-Gilles. It sits on the rear facade of the Hôtel du Grand-Veneur. The avenue connects with Rue Villehardouin. It passes under a porch through Rue de Hesse. Motor vehicle traffic is prohibited here.

The Square Saint-Gilles Grand Veneur – Pauline-Roland is a hidden garden. It sits behind the Hôtel du Grand Veneur. This tranquil square is often missed by tourists. Even many Parisians do not know about it. A short walk down Rue Villehardouin leads to a dead end. Tucked away in a corner, an iron gate marks the entrance.

In warmer months, the secret garden flourishes. Large colourful roses dangle from arbours. The backdrop is the ancient townhouse. It was once known as Hôtel d’Ecquevilly. Now it is commonly called Hôtel du Grand Veneur.

The Hôtel particulier earned its nickname. The Marquis of Ecquevilly took up residence in 1733. He was King Louis XVs officer in charge of hunting. He was the Grand Veneur or master of the hounds. Evidence of his ownership remains on the facade’s decoration. A large sculptured corbel represents a wild boar’s head.

Dogs grace the door knocker on the main facade on Rue de Turenne. Above the bright blue door, hunting hounds flank another boar head. The Square Saint-Gilles Grand Veneur – Pauline Roland pays tribute to Pauline Roland. She was a feminist and socialist. She fought for equality of the sexes.

Whether strolling or picnicking the Avenue du Grand Veneur and its square offer a retreat. It’s a piece of Parisian history away from the crowds. Discover this delightful secret treasure. It shows a hidden side of the Marais district. The Avenue du Grand Veneur is more than just a street. It is a journey through time and culture.
