“General, we need a plan.” This very avenue honors a man of strategic brilliance Charles Delestraint. This is the Rue du Général-Delestraint in Paris. It whispers tales of resistance and bravery. This street in the 16th arrondissement is more than just a road. It is a tribute to a French hero.

The Rue du Général-Delestraint stretches 430 meters. It runs from the bustling boulevard Exelmans to boulevard Murat near Place du Général-Stefanik. This avenue started as part of Rue Erlanger in 1869. But in 1954, it was renamed. The new name honored General Charles Delestraint.

Charles Delestraint was a key figure in the French Resistance. Born in 1879, he became the first leader of the Armée secrète. This “Secret Army” was vital in fighting the Nazi occupation. Delestraint’s leadership was courageous. Sadly, he died in the Dachau concentration camp in 1945. His sacrifice made him a symbol of French resilience.

As you walk along the Rue du Général-Delestraint, notice the Foyer Jean-Bosco at the intersection with Rue de Varize. Here, a plaque commemorates General de Gaulle’s famous call to all French citizens. This call inspired resistance against the occupiers. The plaque serves as a reminder of the spirit of the time.

Further down at number 46, a famous writer and journalist once lived. Raoul Follereau called this place home from 1925 to 1977. A plaque honors his memory on the building’s facade.

Look at number 55. It stands proudly at the corner of boulevard Murat. This building was built in 1920 by architect Louis Favier. It was designed for ironworker Edgar Brandt. Brandt used it as his residence and offices. The building has been modified but some original ironwork remains.

Across the street at number 58, you will see an extension of a mansion. The original building was designed by Paul Guadet. The extension, added in 1922, created a garage. The hotel particulier is a historical monument since 1986.

In 2024, a new addition enhanced the street’s appeal. The Maison de santé Mary Jacobi opened an annex at 36 Rue du Général Delestraint. It improved healthcare access, especially for pregnant women and seniors.

The Rue du Général-Delestraint is not just a street. It is a journey through history. It honors a hero and showcases Parisian life. As you continue your walk, remember the stories embedded in the stones of this avenue.
