In the heart of Le Perreux-sur-Marne, Avenue du Château de Plaisance whispers tales of a vanished grandeur. Avenue du Château de Plaisance isn’t just a street; it’s a ghost of what once was. A magnificent château, named Plaisance, once graced this very spot. Imagine a sprawling estate, complete with gardens designed by the renowned landscaper, La Chapelle. This was Plaisance, a place of pleasure and leisure. The château itself was a marvel, rebuilt in a mere six months in 1735 by Joseph Pâris-Duverney. He spared no expense, hiring architect Pierre Boscry to design a grand residence. The château’s salon, decorated in just 15 days, boasted gilded cornices and Chinese figures. Christophe Huet, the famed painter, adorned the walls with vibrant depictions of flora and fauna. Avenue du Château de Plaisance was a hub of activity, hosting notable figures like the Duchess du Maine, Voltaire, and Émilie du Châtelet. Sadly, Plaisance’s glory was fleeting. In 1818, the estate was sold and subsequently dismantled. The materials, from the iron gates to the marble fireplaces, were auctioned off. Even the merino sheep and the year’s fruit harvest were sold. Avenue du Château de Plaisance stands as a quiet testament to this lost paradise. The street’s name, a constant reminder of the grandeur that once was, invites us to imagine the lavish fêtes and intellectual gatherings that took place within the château walls. Though the château is gone, its story lives on in the very name of Avenue du Château de Plaisance.
