“An avenue named after a priory?” the young man questioned, peering down the tree-lined street. “That’s unusual, isn’t it?” His companion chuckled, “Indeed! Welcome to Avenue des Hautes Bruyères. This street takes its name from the Priory of Haute-Bruyère, a fascinating piece of history now lost to time”. The Avenue des Hautes Bruyères, once a quiet lane leading to the priory’s grand gates, now bustled with modern life. Yet, remnants of its past lingered. The Priory of Haute-Bruyère, founded in 1114, was no ordinary religious house. Established by the powerful Montfort family, it served as their mausoleum, housing the remains of figures like Bertrade de Montfort, Queen of France. Even the heart of Amaury VI de Montfort, a legendary Grand Constable of France, found its final resting place here. Imagine the solemn processions that once traversed this avenue, carrying the mortal remains of nobles and knights to their final repose. The priory itself was a testament to the power and influence of the Fontevrault Order, a unique order where both men and women lived in separate quarters under the rule of an abbess. Sadly, the French Revolution brought a tragic end to the Priory of Haute-Bruyère. Closed in 1790, it was later demolished, its lands sold, and its stones repurposed. The avenue, however, retained its name, a subtle echo of the grandeur that once graced this place. So as you stroll down Avenue des Hautes Bruyères, take a moment to reflect. Beneath the pavement and amidst the modern buildings lies the dust of kings and queens, a silent testament to a time when faith and power intertwined on this very ground.
