Lost in the Parisian maze a hidden treasure awaits. Avenue des Chanoinesses a street steeped in history beckons. It is a short street on the Right Bank not to be confused with a similarly named street on the Ile de la Cite. This charming lane whispers tales of canons clergymen attached to a nearby church.

Avenue des Chanoinesses once formed the main artery of the ancient Notre-Dame cloister. This northeastern part of the Ile de la Cite thrived for centuries. Its unique charm and proximity to the cathedral attract tourists. Legends and stories mingle with the street’s history. The street’s picturesque features and rich heritage captivate visitors. Archaeological digs unearthed evidence of a Gallo-Roman origin. They discovered part of Lutece’s ancient defensive wall.

In 1874 Avenue des Chanoinesses underwent a transformation. It absorbed part of Rue des Marmousets. Rue des Marmousets vanished. Another part was truncated by the expansion of the Hotel Dieu grounds. The Hotel Dieu underwent reconstruction from 1867 to 1878. Number 3 on Avenue des Chanoinesses was hit by a German shell during World War I. It happened on April 12 1918. The shell was fired by one of the Paris guns.

Number 12 houses the former home of the Grand Chantre. This grand 17th-century building boasts beautiful facades. Ornate ironwork balconies and a studded door hint at hidden treasures. Inside lies a vaulted entrance and an inner courtyard with a well. In the 20th century the Aga Khan and his family lived there.

Near the corner of Rue de la Colombe two shops held a grim reputation. There in 1387 a barber named Labard and his accomplice a baker named Miquelon committed heinous acts. Miquelon’s pastries were reputedly excellent. Investigation revealed a gruesome truth. The pastries contained the flesh of Labard’s victims. The story unfolds a chilling tale similar to that of Sweeney Todd.
