“The Boulevard des Capucines is one of the four grands boulevards in Paris,” a voice booms, its owner pointing down along the Avenue des Capucines. We are standing right in front of it, on the edge of the bustling city. The avenue is a living, breathing history of Paris – brimming with stories of the city’s past and present.

This is a street that has seen its fair share of notable figures. It was once home to a beautiful convent of Capuchin nuns. The boulevard was a popular place for artists and writers – attracting the likes of Catulle Mendés, Jean Moréas, Armand Silvestre, and Laurent Tailhade.

In 1825, a Georama was erected at Number 7. It was a unique attraction that allowed visitors to see the whole world inside a massive sphere. The world has changed a lot since. But the echoes of its past still remain.

At number 14, the Hotel Scribe played host to a pivotal moment in history – the very first public showing of movies by Auguste and Louis Lumière. The event took place in the Salon Indien of the Grand Café, marking the beginning of cinema as we know it.

The avenue also saw the birth of Impressionism. In the mid-1870s, several young artists – Renoir, Édouard Manet, Pissarro, and Claude Monet – gathered at number 35 to hold their first exhibition. The name “Impressionists” first emerged from this exhibition, after Monet’s famous painting “Impression, Sunrise” stood prominently there. It was a moment that changed art history forever.

The Avenue des Capucines is much more than a street; it’s a testament to the artistic and cultural dynamism of Paris. Imagine the energy and excitement that ran through the Parisian air as cinema took root, as Impressionism bloomed, as artists and writers came together to create and inspire. It’s a street steeped in history and a place where the wonders of creativity continue to unfold.
