On the edge of Lyon, where the city meets the quieter commune of Champagne-au-Mont-d’Or, stretches Avenue d’Écully. Avenue d’Écully isn’t your typical bustling city street. It’s more of a thoroughfare, a bridge between two worlds. Opened in the 1960s as part of the La Duchère development, Avenue d’Écully played a key role in shaping this district, especially the Quartier de la Sauvegarde. Originally called 7e avenue de la Duchère, it didn’t receive its current name until 1989. The avenue gently slopes upwards from a former grove of pines, now replaced with a new link to Rue Maurice Béjard. The buildings along Avenue d’Écully stand apart, not all of them facing the street directly. Their gates seem designed more for cars than pedestrians. On the south side, Avenue d’Écully runs alongside a four-story apartment building. It’s set back behind hedges, lawns, and a parking area. Further down, you’ll find a sports field and a small wooded area sloping down an embankment. The north side, bordering Champagne-au-Mont-d’Or, starts near a striking white chimney. This chimney, a landmark of the urban heating system, leads the way past a workshop tucked back from the avenue. Then you come across apartment buildings, four and six stories high, and a substantial tower block, all set back amidst hedges and trees. Interestingly, Avenue d’Écully isn’t actually located in Écully, but it commemorates the commune. Écully, a town of 18,000 inhabitants, lies southwest of this avenue. The name honors Écully’s contribution of land to Lyon. This land transfer ensured that the entire La Duchère project could be contained within Lyon’s city limits. So, as you stand on Avenue d’Écully, you are standing on a piece of history. It’s a testament to urban development, inter-communal cooperation, and the ever-evolving landscape of a growing city.
