Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque was born in 1902. His family had a tradition of military service to France. He graduated from Saint Cyr military academy in 1924. When war broke out in 1939, Leclerc was assigned to the 4th Infantry Division.
In May 1940, during the Battle of France, Leclerc twice escaped capture. He joined Charles de Gaulle in London. De Gaulle promoted him to major. Leclerc adopted the pseudonym “Leclerc” to protect his family. Vichy agents targeted families of Free French fighters.
De Gaulle sent Leclerc to represent Free France in Nigeria. Leclerc led a small force into Cameroon. He rallied colonists and seized Douala without bloodshed. Soon all of French Equatorial Africa joined Free France. De Gaulle then tasked Leclerc with attacking Italian Libya.
In early 1941 Leclerc commanded Free French forces in North Africa. He orchestrated daring raids against Italian garrisons. A key moment was the capture of Kufra. There Leclerc made his men swear an oath. They vowed not to lay down arms until the French flag flew over Strasbourg Cathedral.
In 1943, Leclerc’s forces played a key role in the Battle of Tunisia. Later, Leclerc’s command became the 2nd Free French Division. They were equipped with modern American weapons.
