“Avenue de la Pyramide? That’s a funny name for a street!” I overheard a tourist say. And it’s true. The Avenue de la Pyramide, stretching out before us right here in the heart of the Bois de Vincennes, gets its name from a rather unique landmark: the Pyramide de Vincennes. This obelisk isn’t Egyptian, though it might remind you of one. This avenue is one of the longest in Paris, a full 3 kilometers from end to end! It cuts right through the Bois de Vincennes, starting at the Avenue des Canadiens and ending at the Esplanade Saint-Louis near the Château de Vincennes. Imagine, once upon a time, this route was part of a grand plan to replant the entire woods back in 1731. A little slice of order in nature, designed by Robert de Cotte. And from 1855 to the 1950s, a military field used to occupy the very ground where we’re standing! The avenue even crossed paths with history. It wasn’t officially part of Paris until 1929. Before that, it belonged to Fontenay-sous-Bois, Joinville-le-Pont, and Vincennes. Now, the Avenue de la Pyramide is your gateway to so much of what makes the Bois de Vincennes special. It’ll lead you past the Arboretum, where you can lose yourself amongst the trees. You can practically smell the freshly cut grass as you stroll towards the stunning Parc Floral de Paris, a symphony of colors and scents. The avenue even guides you to the Hippodrome de Vincennes, where you might just hear the thunder of hooves. So, as we begin our journey down the Avenue de la Pyramide, keep your eyes peeled and your ears open. Every corner holds a whisper of history, ready to be discovered.
