Slipping through time, imagine 19th-century Marseille. Avenue de la Pinede, then just a vision, was about to transform. Today, we stand on this very avenue, a testament to urban development. Avenue de la Pinede, once a quiet lane, now bustles with life. This transformation, starting in early 2023, saw Eurovia Marseille undertake a massive overhaul. The project, slated to continue through May 2025, involves restructuring water and utility networks, pavements, and road surfaces. A staggering 4,300 tons of asphalt, including 2,600 tons of “optimized” gravel bitumen will be used. This innovative material reduces thickness and incorporates recycled aggregates. Avenue de la Pinede is not just about modernization. It’s about sustainability. Permeable light-colored asphalt is being used for sidewalks and bike paths. This minimizes rainwater runoff, promoting ground infiltration while reducing the urban heat island effect. Further emphasizing its eco-conscious approach, the project prioritizes material reuse. 18,000 cubic meters of extracted materials will either be directly reused as backfill or temporarily stored nearby. This significantly reduces transport impact and greenhouse gas emissions. Any remaining materials find a new purpose in other Euroméditerranée operations. Avenue de la Pinede’s location in a densely populated area demanded careful planning. The project is meticulously phased to maintain public transport stops, access to the flea market, pedestrian routes, and two-way traffic flow. Beyond infrastructure, Avenue de la Pinede contributes to social impact. It offers 5,019 hours of employment opportunities for individuals facing barriers to work. As you stroll along Avenue de la Pinede, remember, you’re walking on a path paved with innovation, sustainability, and social responsibility. It embodies Marseille’s commitment to a brighter future.
