“Avenue Daniel Perdrigé. What an odd name, isn’t it?” you whisper to your group, as you approach the avenue. It’s not a famous street or anything like that. Tucked away in the outskirts of Parisian suburb Neuilly-Plaisance, it’s just a normal street.
“But, Daniel Perdrigé was an important man in Neuilly-Plaisance.” You point to the street sign. “It was he who built the Neuilly-Plaisance school in 1914.”
“Don’t act so surprised.” You laugh. “For the time, a school was a big deal.”
“You know what else was a big deal for the time?” you ask. “It sounds weird, but in the 19th century, because of the extreme filth in urban Europe, many cities renamed some of their dirtiest streets after human waste.”
“It’s true! French cities were naming their streets after merde, the French word for ‘shit’.”
“Not here, though.” You smile. “Neuilly-Plaisance was much more civilised, even back then.”
“So, you’re probably disappointed, right?” You ask, getting a few laughs back. “We’re not in a big Parisian adventure. But, hey, think of it like this. Every place deserves a little bit of love. This is a normal street named after a normal man who built a normal school. That means that it’s a perfect example of Parisian life!”
“Now, let’s go down this charming little avenue, and imagine what it was like for Monsieur Perdrigé, walking through it every day.”
