In 1874, a small group began meeting for prayer in a Southend home. This marked the humble beginnings of Avenue Baptist Church. Avenue Baptist Church’s journey wasn’t always easy. The church faced challenges and changes, moving from a public hall to an iron chapel in Hamlet Road. In 1882, a split in the congregation led to the formation of a new church in Clarence Road. Despite this setback, Avenue Baptist Church persevered. By 1896, the membership grew to 175. The dream of a permanent home became a reality in 1899. The church purchased land at the corner of Milton Road and Avenue Terrace. The construction of the present Avenue Baptist Church began. The initial plans included a tall spire, a feature that never came to fruition. On May 30, 1901, the doors of Avenue Baptist Church opened for the first time. The occasion coincided with the congregation’s 25th anniversary. The church quickly became a cornerstone of the community. The growing Sunday school required an expansion. In 1905, a second story was added to the hall. During World War I, seventeen members of Avenue Baptist Church made the ultimate sacrifice. Miraculously, the church building remained unscathed. The church continued to expand. In 1923, an upper gallery was added, increasing the seating capacity to 1,000. Further additions included a manse in Park Crescent in 1926 and a primary hall in 1933. Avenue Baptist Church remained a vibrant part of community life. A children’s service from the church was broadcast on the BBC in 1937. World War II brought new trials. In 1943, a landmine struck the church, damaging the roof and shattering windows. Services temporarily moved to the hall. Undeterred, the congregation continued to gather, even holding a service in the damaged sanctuary to sing the doxology. Through times of growth, division, and war, Avenue Baptist Church’s spirit endured. The church’s story reflects not just its own resilience but also the strength and faith of its community. The ongoing renovations and additions to Avenue Baptist Church illustrate its continuing dedication to serving its community and spreading its message.
