Here at Avenue Albert Sarrault we delve into the past. Who was this Albert Sarraut?

Avenue Albert Sarrault bears the name of a significant French statesman. Albert-Pierre Sarraut was born in Bordeaux in 1872. He passed away in Paris in 1962 at the age of 90. This avenue commemorates his life and contributions.

Sarraut’s political career was marked by his affiliation with the Radical-Socialist Party. He was a prominent figure in French politics during the Third Republic. Sarraut served twice as Prime Minister. His first term was in 1933. His second term was in 1936.

Before his time as Prime Minister, Albert Sarraut held several important positions. He was a member of the Chamber of Deputies. He also served as undersecretary of state and undersecretary of war. He was even the minister of education for a time.

One of Sarraut’s most notable roles was as governor-general of Indochina. He served two terms. The first lasted from 1911 to 1914. The second lasted from 1917 to 1919. As governor-general, Sarraut implemented liberal policies. He increased the number of native Indochinese in the civil service. He recognized the use of local languages and laws. He also continued the public-works policy of his predecessor.

Sarraut’s interest in colonial affairs extended beyond his time in Indochina. He served as minister for the colonies. He sought to coordinate French colonial policy. He promoted development for overseas possessions. He even published books on the subject. These include “La Mise en valeur des colonies françaises” and “Grandeur et servitude coloniales.”

Between 1926 and 1940, Sarraut was a senator. He held several ministerial posts. These included minister of the interior and minister for the navy.

During World War II, Sarraut remained politically inactive. After his brother’s murder, he became editor of Dépêche de Toulouse in 1943. The German Gestapo arrested him in 1944. The Allies released him in 1945.

After the war, Sarraut was unable to regain a seat in parliament. He became a member of the advisory assembly of the French Union in 1947. He served as its president from 1949 to 1958.

Albert Sarraut’s legacy is complex. Some view him as a progressive colonial administrator. Others criticize his paternalistic approach to Indochina. Regardless, his contributions to French politics are undeniable. Avenue Albert Sarraut serves as a reminder of his long and varied career.

As you stroll along Avenue Albert Sarraut consider the life of this French statesman. Think about his impact on French colonial policy and his role in the Third Republic. The avenue stands as a testament to a man who navigated the complex political landscape of his time. It reminds us of the importance of understanding the past to better appreciate the present.
