Is it possible that a street could embody courage? Avenue Adrienne Ranc-Sakakini does exactly that. This avenue in Marseille’s 10th arrondissement isn’t just a road. It is a tribute to a local hero. It is a testament to resilience.

Avenue Adrienne Ranc-Sakakini stretches through the Saint-Loup district. It connects the rue des Trois-Ponts to the avenue du Corps-Expéditionnaire-Français. This avenue is part of the U430 inter-district link. The avenue helps navigate around the village center of Saint-Loup.

The construction of Avenue Adrienne Ranc-Sakakini began in 2014. It opened to traffic in May 2016. This opening followed the 2006 opening of rue du Professeur Roger-Luccioni.

But who was Adrienne Ranc-Sakakini? She was a member of the French Resistance. During World War II, she actively fought against the Nazi occupation. Adrienne was born in Marseille in 1916. She joined the Resistance in 1940. She worked in the accounting department of an international transport company. This gave her access to information about raw material exports to Nazi Germany.

Adrienne joined the F2 network. This was one of the first resistance networks. It was created by the Polish government in exile. She monitored enemy ships and naval facilities. She sent coded information to Free France.

In 1942, she was betrayed. Adrienne was arrested and imprisoned. She was interrogated and tortured. Despite the suffering, she never revealed secrets. After being freed in 1943, she rejoined the Resistance. She participated in the liberation of Marseille in 1944. She met her future husband Fernand Sakakini.

After the war, she remained active in politics. She joined Charles de Gaulle’s party. Adrienne Ranc-Sakakini passed away in 2014 due to a car accident. She was buried in Marseille’s Cimetière Saint-Pierre.

Avenue Adrienne Ranc-Sakakini includes two traffic lanes. It also features a wide bike path. A pedestrian walkway offers city and hill views. The avenue also manages rainwater with underground basins. A bridge was needed for the Chemin des Prud’hommes crossing. Part of a hillside was also cut through.

This avenue is more than just concrete and asphalt. It’s a symbol of courage. It honors a woman who risked her life for freedom. As you walk or bike, remember Adrienne Ranc-Sakakini. Remember her dedication to a better world. She stood firm in the face of adversity.
