October 8th, 1851. A date etched in Uruguayan history. It marked the end of the Guerra Grande, the Uruguayan Civil War. This date also gave its name to the grand Avenida 8 de Octubre in Montevideo. Avenida 8 de Octubre stretches for 3.5 miles, connecting Tres Cruces to Maroñas. It’s a bustling artery of Montevideo, pulsating with life and commerce. Imagine traveling down this avenue in the 1860s. Back then, it was called Camino 8 de Octubre, a cobblestone road leading out of the city. The road was paved from Plaza del Gaucho to what is now Pernas Street, a project completed in 1867. A year earlier, the section of the old Camino a Maldonado between El Gaucho and Tres Cruces was known as Camino a La Unión. This road eventually adopted the name July 18th, extending Montevideo’s main thoroughfare until it joined with Camino 8 de Octubre. Years later, in 1919, a modification to Avenida 18 de Julio resulted in a portion of it becoming part of Avenida 8 de Octubre. This gave the avenue the length we know today. The original cobblestones were replaced with concrete in 1925, modernizing the bustling avenue. Avenida 8 de Octubre also boasts a unique feature. A 300-meter tunnel built in 1961. This tunnel runs under Artigas Boulevard and Democracy Square, a testament to the city’s growth and development. Today, Avenida 8 de Octubre isn’t just a road; it’s a vibrant showcase of Montevideo. It’s home to a diverse array of shops, public institutions, educational centers, and hospitals. Look around. You’ll find landmarks like the Catholic University of Uruguay and the Médica Uruguaya Center nestled along its length. Avenida 8 de Octubre isn’t simply a street. It’s a living timeline, echoing the echoes of peace, progress, and the vibrant spirit of Montevideo.
