Hidden within the Serra de na Burguesa, near the Puig Gros de Bendinat summit, lies the mysterious Avenc des Puig Gros. Have you ever felt the thrill of exploring the unknown? The Avenc des Puig Gros offers just that, a journey into the depths of the earth. The cave’s entrance, a modest opening, hints at the adventure within. This is no ordinary cave. It holds a unique challenge, the presence of carbon dioxide. As you descend into Avenc des Puig Gros, the air grows heavy. You’ll feel a shortness of breath, a reminder of the cave’s hidden power. The Avenc des Puig Gros itself isn’t particularly difficult to navigate. The path is narrow, averaging between one and three meters wide. The walls are solid, perfect for anchoring. The cave twists and turns, a fractured labyrinth of narrow passages and blockages. Lithochemical processes have decorated the walls with flowstones, a testament to the cave’s geological history. The narrow fracture descends, oriented northwest to southeast. A spit at the entrance marks the beginning of your descent. Eighteen meters down, after placing a couple of protectors, another spit awaits. From here, you navigate through jammed blocks to a depth of 29 meters. This point offers two paths, the narrow way and the wide way. The narrow way plunges steeply at a 55-degree angle. It leads down through rocky ledges and embedded blocks to a depth of 60 meters. The wide way is more forgiving, gradually widening as you descend. A spit a few meters down and a natural anchor further on guide you to 52 meters. Beyond this point, the passage narrows again. Another spit allows access to the 60-meter mark. The final stretch, to 75 meters, is a narrow squeeze through a 0.40-meter fracture. Here, the effects of the carbon dioxide become more pronounced. Remember the warning felt higher up. Be prepared with 100 meters of rope, 3 spits, natural anchors, rope protectors, and slings to safely explore Avenc des Puig Gros. But the adventure doesn’t end there. After your subterranean exploration, consider visiting the nearby Cova de s’Aigo Estiulada, a different cave experience.
