Beneath our feet lies a hidden world. It is a world of cool darkness and ancient secrets. We are standing before the Avenc des Matoll de sa Figuera o de ses Figueres. This natural cave offers a glimpse into the geological wonders of Mallorca.

The Avenc des Matoll de sa Figuera is also known as Avenc de ses Figueres. It is easy to miss, forgotten in an area rich with natural cavities. Mines and quarries dot this landscape. The cave is only 75 meters from the Avenc des Garrover.

What makes this cave special? Let’s explore its depths. The entrance is a small circular opening. A young pine tree grows inside. A small carob tree gives the cave its name. “Garrover” means carob tree in Mallorcan. The entrance may have been modified. Miners likely did this but the reason remains unknown.

Inside the Avenc des Matoll de sa Figuera awaits the Sala de ses Columnes. A ten-meter descent is required to reach it. Six meters of this descent are aerial. You will find yourself on a cone-shaped structure of rubble. From here, you can view the entire room. It measures 10 x 11 x 6 meters. Two columns stand out due to their size. The ceiling and walls are covered in beautiful concretions. A striking flowstone adorns the northwest area. It hides a small chamber. This is the Saleta de ses Ratespinyades. Bats frequently visit this small room. In the south corner, look for a corrosion cupola.

Next, we will cross the Sala de ses Columnes. We’re heading towards the “window” to the northeast. After climbing about three meters, we reach a kind of “balcony”. From here, you can access the Sala des Gours. You can descend or create a rope installation. This overcomes the four-meter drop. This chamber measures 10 x 20 x 4 meters. Besides a small group of columns, note the gours. In the southern area, a small corner exists. It is called Es Racó but is not very interesting.

Finally, there is the Saleta d’Amunt. Access it from an area of blocks. Climb a small ramp. After a delicate ascent, you’ll be in a low-ceilinged room. It has a tepee shape. A longitudinal fracture runs along the ceiling. Now obstructed, it may have caused the room’s formation. Dolomitic breccias can be seen in the ceiling.

To explore this cave you will need a rope of at least 25 meters. Another 15-meter rope is recommended. Two rope protectors will also be needed.

The Avenc des Matoll de sa Figuera offers a unique adventure. It combines natural beauty with a touch of mystery. Remember the carob tree. Remember the bats. Remember the cool darkness of this hidden Mallorcan gem.
