The Avenc de sa Sorpresa or “Surprise Sinkhole” is located in Calvià. More precisely it is in Puig d´en Bou. It is in the Serra de na Burguesa.

To get here by car from Palma you take the Ma-20 motorway. Drive in the direction of Andratx. Then take the exit for Génova Ma-1045. At the entrance to the town take the first street on the right. This is Carrer del Rector Vives. You will see signs to Mirador Ca na Burguesa. The car park is at the top.

To continue on foot take the path into the Serra de na Burguesa. Head towards the Coll des Pastors. This is Camí 376. Once there follow the track on the right. It leads to Puig d´en Bou. After the ascent of 450 meters go left across the field. You will find the cave. The walk takes about 45 minutes and covers a distance of 3370 meters.

Before entering the Avenc de sa Sorpresa consider what you will need. You’ll need a rope of about 7 meters.

After descending 4 meters you enter the main chamber. It is 7 x 3 meters. Its average height is 2 meters. The floor slopes downwards at about -30 degrees. The cave runs in an East-Northwest direction.

The Avenc de sa Sorpresa surprises visitors with its many formations. You will see lithochemical formations. There are parietal flows covering the walls. Botroidal shapes hang from the north wall of the ceiling. A fracture and displacement of a column of more than 30 cm is remarkable.

The cave is a wonder of nature. It is fragile and needs protection. Please be careful when you visit the Avenc de sa Sorpresa. Avoid touching the formations. Do not leave any trash behind. Respect the environment and leave no trace of your visit.
