Deep in the Serra de na Burguesa lies Avenc de sa Pols. A hidden gem. A vertical descent into the earth. This is Avenc de sa Pols. Its name means “cave of dust.” A fitting description.
Avenc de sa Pols is a unique cave. It is a long narrow cavity. It runs northeast to southwest. It’s about 30 meters long. The entrance is steep. You descend at a 60-degree angle. The deepest point is 18 meters down.
The walls are made of conglomerate. This is a type of rock. It crumbles easily. That’s why it’s dusty. It’s also why experienced cavers often use ropes for safety. They secure the ropes to sturdy points above. This protects them from falling rocks.
Avenc de sa Pols is not easily reached. You need to drive from Palma. Take the Ma-20 towards Andratx. Then exit at Génova Ma-1045. At the entrance to the village turn right. You’ll see a sign. It points towards Mirador Ca na Burguesa. Park your car there.
From the Mirador it’s a 1730-meter walk. The path leads into the Serra de na Burguesa. This path is marked 736. Once the path starts to climb sharply you will see it. Past the power line around ten meters to the right of the path. You will see the entrance. It’s hidden behind some pine trees.
