Aven Gombault sits on the eastern bank of Vallon des Aiguilles. It lies at the foot of the cliffs of the Marseilleveyre Massif. This chasm plunges to a depth of 27 meters. Imagine peering into its depths. For safety reasons, Aven Gombault has been filled. It’s no longer the gaping maw it once was. But its story remains. The word “aven” means natural well with steep sides. These are carved into limestone by water. This hints at Aven Gombault’s formation over eons. Water patiently sculpted the rock. This created this dramatic feature in the landscape. Now, while we can’t experience its depth firsthand, we can still appreciate its presence. Aven Gombault serves as a reminder of nature’s power.
