Two gaping openings mark the entry to a hidden world. We are standing before the Aven du Mont Lantin. It is a place where the earth breathes secrets.

The Aven du Mont Lantin is not just any cave entrance. It is a gateway to the depths of the Mont Lantin. This mountain rises to 570 meters. It provides a stunning 360-degree view of the whole region.

Imagine standing here centuries ago. The maps of Cassini would have labeled this peak “le Lointain.” Today, it is known as Mont Lantin.

Now look closely at the two cave entrances. They sit a mere 10 meters apart on the crest of the mountain. Each leads to a series of vertical shafts. They are separate but connected by a small opening at 28 meters down.

Daredevils and adventurers take note. The Aven du Mont Lantin extends to a depth of 72 meters. The eastern cavity is infamously dangerous. Rocks often fall within it. It is far safer to explore this cave system. Enter through the western opening. Then use the connecting passage at 28 meters.

The Aven du Mont Lantin lies northwest of the Carpiagne military camp. It is about 300 meters east of the Mont Lantin peak. The eastern summit is about 100 meters away.

The Aven du Mont Lantin is more than a geological formation. It is a part of the Massif Saint-Cyr. This area is near Marseille and La Penne-sur-Huveaune. Many hiking trails wind through it. These trails offer stunning views.

Hiking here requires some planning. The area around Mont Lantin sometimes closes. This happens during military shooting exercises. Access to the Massif is restricted from June 1 to September 30. This is due to fire risks. Always check the local regulations.

The hike to the Aven du Mont Lantin is rewarding. Trails pass through varied terrain. You will find fragrant garrigue with thorny kermes oaks. Rosemary and thyme fill the air. Small cairns mark some of the routes. They guide hikers along the path.

As you stand here remember the Aven du Mont Lantin’s story. It is a place of natural beauty. It is also a challenge for those who seek to explore its depths. The Aven du Mont Lantin is an invitation. It calls out to discover the secrets hidden beneath our feet.
