Can you imagine a hawk-like beast, yet with a human form embedded in its back? That’s the Avatar Sculpture at Canary Wharf. The Avatar Sculpture was created by Robert Worley in 2009. It’s made of cast aluminium and stands proudly in Westferry Circus. This isn’t just any sculpture. It was actually the winning piece of the FIRST@108 Public Art Award in 2009. The Royal British Society of Sculptors runs this annual award. It gives artists, who are new to public art, a chance to create a large-scale sculpture. Canary Wharf Group sponsored the award and then purchased the Avatar Sculpture. They added it to their permanent collection. The Avatar Sculpture is a striking sight. You can see it any time of day or night. It adds a unique touch to the modern landscape of Canary Wharf.
