A cube of raw concrete. That is the first impression of the Autobahnkapelle Kassel. Yet, this simple structure offers solace to travelers from all walks of life.
The Autobahnkapelle “Licht auf dem Weg” or Light on the Way sits at the Kassel Mitte interchange. This is where the A7 and A49 motorways meet. It is on the grounds of the Lohfeldener Rüssel rest stop. Gerhard Greiner from HHS Architects in Kassel designed it. The chapel was consecrated on October 23, 2009. It is open day and night.
The Autobahnkapelle Kassel is a visible symbol. It is a place for reflection near the Autobahnkreuz Kassel-Mitte.
The Autobahnkapelle’s design is striking in its simplicity. The cube shape measures five by five meters. It stands five and a half meters tall. A tall entrance door mirrors the height of the interior. Inside, a cross-shaped stele made of Brazilian sandstone catches the eye. The words “UND SIEHE: ICH BIN BEI EUCH ALLE TAGE – JESUS CHRISTUS” are inscribed on the wall. This translates to “And behold, I am with you always – Jesus Christ.”
The Autobahnkapelle Kassel provides a sense of security. Its solid construction offers strength. The cross reminds visitors that Jesus Christ is always with them.
The Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck and the Diocese of Fulda partnered in this project. Heinz Fehr was a private sponsor. Together, they created a place of peace.
Travelers and locals are welcome at the Autobahnkapelle. It is easily accessible from the A7 and A49 highways. Take exit 79 from the A7 or exit 2 from the A49. Follow signs for “Lohfeldener Rüssel.” The chapel is also reachable by bicycle or public transport from Kassel-Waldau and Lohfelden. Parking is available for cars, buses, and trucks at the rest stop. The entire rest stop is designed to be accessible.
The Autobahnkapelle Kassel also considers those who grieve. In November 2024, a comfort altar was set up. Here, relatives can remember loved ones who died in traffic accidents. They can light a candle and write their sorrows in a book. Comforting prayers are available.
Willi Stiel leads the ecumenical support group for the Autobahnkapelle Kassel. He and his team ensure that the chapel remains a welcoming space. They provide spiritual support to all visitors.
Feel free to enter the Autobahnkapelle. Pause for a moment. Recharge your soul. Light a candle. Write your thoughts in the prayer book. Know that you are not alone on your journey. God is with you. The Autobahnkapelle Kassel is open twenty-four hours a day. It provides rest for the soul. Take a travel blessing card with you. May God bless and protect you today and always.
