Ever wonder how a domestic airline of Argentina could disappear? We are standing near the place where the story of Austral Líneas Aéreas intersects with Buenos Aires.

Austral was not just any airline. It was the sister company of Aerolíneas Argentinas. Think of them as siblings navigating the skies of Argentina.

Founded in 1957 as Compañía Austral de Transportes Aéreos, Austral began flying in January 1958. Its story is one of mergers and acquisitions. It reflects the turbulent history of Argentine aviation.

In 1971, Austral Líneas Aéreas emerged from the fusion of CATASACI and ALA. CATASACI absorbed ALA. It rebranded itself as Austral Líneas Aéreas S.A.

For many years, Austral operated an all-Embraer 190 fleet. These aircraft could seat up to 96 passengers. This ensured a comfortable and efficient flying experience.

Austral served various destinations within Argentina. These included Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Bariloche, and Mendoza. It connected key cities across the country.

Austral Líneas Aéreas faced financial difficulties. There were failed attempts to re-privatize it in the 1980s.

In 1988, the airline faced a major accident. A McDonnell Douglas MD-81 crashed on approach to Posadas. This tragic event cast a shadow over the airline’s operations.

In 2020, a significant change occurred. Austral merged with Aerolíneas Argentinas. This merger aimed to save 100 million USD. It also meant the end of the Austral brand.

The merger raised concerns among staff due to union affiliations. These differences led to conflicts between the two entities.

Austral officially ceased operations in November 2020. Its legacy remains as part of Aerolíneas Argentinas.

Austral’s main hub was Aeroparque Jorge Newbery Airport in Buenos Aires. This airport is a crucial point for domestic flights. It has a range of services and amenities.

Before its end, Austral’s fleet consisted of 26 Embraer 190s. These aircraft connected various domestic destinations.

Austral had a complicated history of accidents and incidents. The most deadly one was in 1997. A DC-9-32 crashed en route from Posadas to Buenos Aires. Icing of the pitot tubes was the likely cause.

Austral Líneas Aéreas played a vital role in Argentina’s aviation history. It connected people and places. Its story reflects the challenges and changes in the airline industry.
